Summary

The book wasn't bad, but it reads like a scientific exposé, except the science isn't real。 I'm sure the author did his research to make it as realistic as possible, but it's fundamentally all hypothetical (obviously, since it's about a mars landing)。 Time would be better spent reading a similarly detailed book which describes real aerospace ventures。 The premise is interesting though, which is why summing it up into a two hour, non-scientific movie was great。 The book wasn't bad, but it reads like a scientific exposé, except the science isn't real。 I'm sure the author did his research to make it as realistic as possible, but it's fundamentally all hypothetical (obviously, since it's about a mars landing)。 Time would be better spent reading a similarly detailed book which describes real aerospace ventures。 The premise is interesting though, which is why summing it up into a two hour, non-scientific movie was great。 。。。more

4。25 / 5 StarsThe 50% of this book I actually understood was super fun! I appreciated the attention to the science-- but boy, was it A LOT of science! I honestly got to the point where I skimmed a lot of it, because to me it was really just gibberish。 Math is not my strong suit, and this was a love letter to it。So, the biggest surprise to me was how funny the book is。 I don't know about you, but I don't usually correlate sci-fi to laugh-out-loud funny。。。 or at least not to this degree (Firefly n 4。25 / 5 StarsThe 50% of this book I actually understood was super fun! Yeah。 There were definitely parts where it struck me as very unlikely that Watney would be so flippant。 Like I said, it was a coping mechanism, and when he was logging the horrific events he'd experienced at least a few hours after the fact I can absolutely understand; but there was a scene where he was typing his log mere minutes post almost-dying, still strapped into his flipped/crashed rover and having to strain to reach the keyboard and。。。 he cracked jokes。。。。 Or when NASA told him his words were being broadcast live to the entire global population so he。。。 made emoji boobs。 Sometimes, it was just too much。 But to be fair, I have never lived with a constant threat of imminent death, so I can't say how realistic that would be。Anyway, over all, I think that humor made the story accessible to an audience that probably would have been repelled by all of the hardcore, step-by-step science experiments。My last thought, having not seen the movie either (I'll check it out now that I've read it), is that I absolutely could not picture Matt Damon as Mark。 Like I said, Watney was about 90% snark 10% math and I've never really thought of Damon as a comedic actor。 Just saying, seems like weird casting。 But maybe that's just me。 。。。more

Escape reading at its finestFun, edge-of-your seat, reading。 I don’t usually read science fiction, but glad I read this。 Sometimes you just need a good escape novel, and this was one of the best。 Thoroughly enjoyed!

Right, so I did put off reading this for years because everyone loved it so much and told me to read it。 Turns out, it is actually very fun although not as fun as Hail Mary (which I put down entirely to lack of aliens)。

Exciting wonderful ending。

I enjoyed this book a lot。 I can tell by the way it’s written on how well researched the book is。 So many scientific and aeronautics jargon, that it felt like my mind was blown away。 Furthermore I really enjoyed how this book depicted the classic struggle between man and nature, and the importance of human solidarity and compassion。The main character, Mark Watney, is amusing to read。 He comes off as annoying and arrogant, yet intelligent, resourceful, and cunning。 I like how Watney truly was a d I enjoyed this book a lot。 I can tell by the way it’s written on how well researched the book is。 So many scientific and aeronautics jargon, that it felt like my mind was blown away。 Furthermore I really enjoyed how this book depicted the classic struggle between man and nature, and the importance of human solidarity and compassion。The main character, Mark Watney, is amusing to read。 He comes off as annoying and arrogant, yet intelligent, resourceful, and cunning。 I like how Watney truly was a dimensional character — he isn’t perfect, and he has his strengths and weaknesses that adds to his human like charm。 I found it easy to root for him just because of how admirable and somewhat relatable he is。 I mean, come on, if you’re stranded in Mars for more than a year, I suppose you get a little leeway in being annoying。The ending was written very well。 I was really engrossed with the story。 Here’s a favorite quote of mine (I believe this is a non spoiler quote):“Yes, there are assholes who just don’t care, but they’re massively outnumbered by the people who do。”***For audiobook listeners, I have to add that first I was put off because of a horrible Audible performance when I first tried listening to the audiobook。 Reading the book on your own is infinitely better than listening to the horrible audiobook version。 。。。more

I really liked this book。 I liked the problem solving of Mark and the team。 I like that he had set backs and continued to solve the issues。 I liked how the world responded to Mark's survival and I liked how his team responded to leaving him behind and then his survival on Mars。 I was very happy to read this suspenseful sci-fi book。I really liked this book。 I really liked this book。 I liked the problem solving of Mark and the team。 I like that he had set backs and continued to solve the issues。 I liked how the world responded to Mark's survival and I liked how his team responded to leaving him behind and then his survival on Mars。 I was very happy to read this suspenseful sci-fi book。I really liked this book。 。。。more

I mostly listen to books instead of read them。 I liked the audio recording that I listened to。What I didn't like was the language。 I probably would have rated the book higher if it weren't for the language。 I usually stop reading a book if it has bad language in it but I finished this one。 I mostly listen to books instead of read them。 I liked the audio recording that I listened to。What I didn't like was the language。 I probably would have rated the book higher if it weren't for the language。 I usually stop reading a book if it has bad language in it but I finished this one。 。。。more

4。25 starsThis was such a great read。 Admittedly, a lot of the science went over my head, but Mark Watney was a very entertaining character to follow, and I'm glad we got to see what was going on down on Earth and with the Hermes。 Would recommend。 4。25 starsThis was such a great read。 Admittedly, a lot of the science went over my head, but Mark Watney was a very entertaining character to follow, and I'm glad we got to see what was going on down on Earth and with the Hermes。 Would recommend。 。。。more

I wish I could give it more stars。 I had so much fun reading this book。 I am not normally a science fiction or fantasy reader。 I need to be convinced the story can really happen。 I'm no expert, but every scenario seemed plausible, yet every situation had me on the edge of my imaginary seat。 It's not easy to make realism and excitement one in the same in science fiction。 Great read! This is hands down one of my all-time favorite books。 It's Castaway on Mars。 That's it。 You pick up the book knowing exactly what you're going to get。 But it's so well done that even after the fourth time reading it, I just can't put it down。 This is hands down one of my all-time favorite books。 It's Castaway on Mars。 That's it。 You pick up the book knowing exactly what you're going to get。 But it's so well done that even after the fourth time reading it, I just can't put it down。 。。。more

Not my normal read but I really enjoyed this story。 Once you look past all the scientific numbers and calculations and get to the meat of the story, you can’t stop reading until you know what happens to Mark。 Now to watch the movie…

The best analogy I can make for this book is to Grey's Anatomy。 Meaning, is it good? No。 But it sure is compelling。 The bones are there for a really good story--maybe even the movie was, with a good screenwriter。 Book club pick that was an enjoyable enough read even though the prose is pretty amateur (although not terrible or overwrought) and character development extremely thin。The one thought-provoking part (which of course is hackily handled, as is all the exposition in this novel) is around The best analogy I can make for this book is to Grey's Anatomy。 Meaning, is it good?
